Eugenics: The second Wave
By Fredrick Osborn
I can’t help but relate this article with Althuser’s ‘Ideological State Apparatus’, which deals with imbedding a certain mentality/ideology as part of a strategy of designating an individual into the workforce. This was necessary for the ‘State’ to prepare workers who would function as a unit/production and contribute to the growth of the economy.
The advancement of technology bring scientist closer to manufacturing the perfect candidate through genetic engineering as part of the bigger picture production strategy. Already today, we perceive getting the best education as an essential to getting the best job in return for good wage and a sense of accomplishments for the economy. The school is the perfect ideology institution that already part of the production, designed to prep children for the work force. In Eugenics, the possibility is even greater, for it pre determines a person’s place/function in life even before birth. This creates efficiency in paving way for individuals towards becoming part of the consumer society. Although this has not been fully implemented, but slowly the idea and it’s potential is resurfacing that draws interest among society. Cloaked by the illusion of choice, the media and corporations work hand in hand cautiously using the strategy of subversion in everyday life to society into aligning with capitalist’s vision of utopia. Unless careful considerations are made, it seems Fredrick Osborn’s vision of a silent flesh revolution would become a reality.
